Five questions you can ask partners or close friends when you want to understand each other better. Pick a time when you're feeling close, calm, and spacious, and take turns asking each other!

There are so many things we typically don't talk about in our longest and most familiar relationships - what are deepest values are, how we could better manage conflict, how we prefer to give and receive love.

Why is that?

Some people might fear that they won't like the truth when they find it. Others may hold a belief that their closest relationships should just flow, without needing to deliberately have more difficult conversations.

One thing I've learned is that these conversations tend to leave me feeling closer to the other person, even if we discover a difference between us that might feel like an incompatibility. When we create connection through talking openly about these things, with patience and compassion, it tends to be much easier to find creative ways around disagreements.

I’m often struck by how common it is to feel we

I’m often struck by how common it is to feel we need to be different somehow in our relationships. Among friends we might feel as though we need to be more entertaining or feel less anxious. With partners we might feel like we need to get turned on more easily or express our emotions differently.

The problem is, often there’s something deeper going on underneath any of these desires for change: a deeper belief that there is something wrong with you the way you are.

(Not always. But often.)

So I want to make a suggestion: instead of seeking out coaching or therapy or a workshop or whatever to change something about yourself, how might it be to seek out a space where you can just relax into being exactly as you are, and allow yourself to be seen and met in whatever that looks like?

How might it feel to have the permission to stop trying so hard?

If you have relationships in your life right now that do create some of this space, I recommend really savouring the time you get to spend simply being in the presence of someone else. Practicing allowing in the feeling of acceptance and connection can be a wonderful way of reminding your body that you are ok just as you are.

Because the thing is, when you can start to really feel, deep in your bones, that you are ok... you can still change things about yourself. It's just that those changes come from a place of love and patience, rather than urgency and fear.

That makes a huge difference!

What if it’s not actually another solutions-focused, goal-oriented approach that you need… but a space where you can relax into being just as you are, in the presence of another?

This can be a really significant experience, especially if there aren’t many spaces like this in your life right now.

When we learn to be with ourselves as we are, we grow our capacity for intimacy and deep connection - because we’re growing our capacity for presence.
